The Grimm Games Play by IntotheMask Theatre & Education
Set in 1985s, in a small town in Australia, there are 5 best friends who all go to the same school and have one thing in common. They love the new console video games. They are particularly interested in the latest RPG video games called The Grimm Games. This is a series of games that use the Grimm Brother tales as the basis of their stories.
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm had a passion for historicism and devoted research to keeping old folk tales from becoming extinct. From stories they had heard or were told during their research they compiled their own set of stories to be published in 1812. Since then, game developers have created a game based on their famous stories, Snowdrop, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel etc.
In this play, the friends are in Fawn’s living room, about to play The Grimm Games. Each “level” of the game there is a story or fairy tale is played out and there is always a villain to defeat, or riddle to solve and sometimes even just a fun time. The long-time friends have played Grimm Games Vol. 1 and really enjoyed it. They have waited two years for Volume 2 to come out, and finally, they have it in their hands.
As they read the back of the packaging, something is a bit off. Firstly, it was sold to Fawn by a stranger in a dark alley. Totally suspicious. And the description sounds a lot more dangerous. As they begin to start the game, the players are given an option to go right or left.
A strange request on the screen they’ve never seen before. “Come what may, follow the right
path and never stray, Or choose the other and follow the path of the third Grimm
brother” When Jora decides to take control, he clicks left and the entire room blacks out. They have been sucked into the game. With clues that help them along, the only way out is solve the riddles. Are they equipped to fight the villains from the inside?
Watch as the kids who have been separated from ordinary life and thrust into a magical world, undergo tests and challenges. Will they end up being the heroes in the end of this entire magical game? Can they trust everyone inside? Will they ever be free and return to Fawn’s
living room?

The Style of Theatre: non realism- presentational style of acting is Presentational acting', in this sense, refers to a relationship that acknowledges the audience, whether directly by addressing them, or indirectly through a general attitude or specific use of language, looks, gestures or other signs that indicate that the character or actor is aware of the audience's presence.
The Set: Non realistic. Metaphorical Structures and pieces.
The Influence of The Commedia dell’arte: Fairy tale characters are often one dimensional they are played with the idea of presenting universal symbol, image, pattern or presentation called “archetypes” Each character in our play will directly relate to an archetype or stock character in the commedia dell’arte, thus a universal understanding of the way that character thinks, moves and behaves. It also will reveal a lot of about the decisions they will make because that archetype has a predetermined objective, and function in any play/scene. It is up to our students to bring these characters to life, to use their non verbal and verbal communication to express the character and transcend them for an audience.
The styles of characters:
There are The Gamers who are “players of the game” and the fairy tale folk “talers” who are the Non-character players of a video game. The style of acting is slightly different in that, the talers will sometimes only speak when approached, or interact with the players in order to deliver urgent or background information.
There us plenty of room for students, director or choreographer to have creative license to change or amend ending, create dialogue, movement and action. We can provide a costume guide upon request!
